Question:
What do cruise ships do to protect against a hurricane?

I know they will avoid it if they can, but if a ship is caught in a hurricane, what physical changes or otherwise do they make to the ship to make it safer? Do they use stabilizers to make the ship less rocky, for instance?

Thank you very much in advance for any helpful answers.

The biggest thing they do is avoid them. With satellites and computer forecasting, it is virtually impossible for any modern ship to be caught in a Hurricane unexpectedly. If there is a Hurricane forecast for where a particular ship will be, the ship will either not sail or sail to alternate ports instead.

Now, you can be in bad weather a lot less than a hurricane. In rough seas the ship can deploy stabilizers. However, those only stabilize the side to side motion, they do not do much for the bow to stern movement. So if you are in 10-20 foot sees you will feel the movement as you go up and down. This is actually a very interesting sensation, especially near the bow of the boat. It also can provide hours of entertainment watching people trying to walk in these conditions or seeing waves forming in the pools.

Also FYI...It is considered a Hurricane when Winds hit 74MPH. So the 85MPH mentioned in another answer would not be 1/5 of Hurricane strength it would be a Category 1 Full blown Hurricane.

I was on a cruise ship during hurricane Sandy. Our Captain kept our ship in Canada and stayed out of harms way. A Disney ship did get caught a bit in the hurricane as it was heading south. But everyone was safe. Just some stuff fell off of the shelves, mostly in the stores on the ship. Ship have fantastic Navigation systems that watch for storms and know how to avoid them.

They will avoid it. They will not get caught in a hurricane.

Hurricanes don't just pop up all of a sudden. Hurricanes are easily tracked with radar and satellites. The ship's Captain knows where the hurricane is and stays a safe distance from it. If necessary they will even change the itinerary of the cruise, stop at different ports, and on rare occasions they will cancel a cruise if needed.

Easy to avoid hurricane. The ship moves faster than the storm So they go around or the other way.

no longer something is exempt from terrorism. It makes a guy or woman slightly uneasy yet we proceed to stay with the terrorism that prevails. The terrorism isn't as unfavourable simply by fact the greed ruled US government that deprives its voters of wellness care. Robbing from the pensions of the elderly. Making prescribed drugs unobtainable for any however the richest voters of the US. This government isn't in basic terms killing in Iraq that could be a diversion so which you're looking over there together because it steals the drugs and jobs from the voters human beings and watch simply by fact the elderly and disabled die.
